In all of us, there are folds of tissue, or frenums, that connect our upper and lower lips to our gums and our tongue to our gums. They can be found between our upper front teeth (Maxillary frenum), our lower front teeth (Mandibular frenum), and underneath our tongue (Lingual frenum).
Because of development, sometimes these frenums can be attached higher than they should be and can cause separation of the teeth and/or gingival recession and some speech impediments. When these symptoms occur it becomes necessary to clip, or remove the frenum, a procedure called a frenectomy. Our Periodontists are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery. We are the only Board Certified Periodontal group in Kansas City. Drs. Thomas, Linstadt, Combs, & Thomas perform frenectomies in Kansas City at all 6 locations.
