Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the bacteria in our mouths interacting with our immune system leading to inflammation that causes bone loss. Periodontal disease is not a disease that can be cured rather it has to be controlled in order to prevent further bone loss and loss of teeth. Evidence-based research shows that it takes bacteria 3 months (90 days) to multiply to levels and populations that will cause the deterioration of the bone around our teeth. To control the disease and the bacterial population, or biofilm, it is recommended that patients have their teeth cleaned every 3 months.
Periodontal maintenance is necessary to reduce inflammation and extend the life and health of the teeth. We recommend alternating periodontal maintenance between your Periodontists who are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery and your General Dentist every 3 months in order to maintain your optimal health.
